24 Hours of Moab

Now that we're just about to leave for the 25 Hrs in Frog Hollow I thought I'd write a bit about the 24 Hrs of Moab that happened this past October 8-9th. My good buddies Will and Randy decided to enter in the Solo division, Will running single speed and Randy on his Carver Ti snow bike!

Will and I arrived early to set up our camp on solo row, but in the meantime we were able to hang out at the "Sandbox"/Stompa VIP camp, which happens to be a mere 3/4 of a mile from the start/finish area. This is by far one of my favorite parts of the 24 Hrs of Moab each year, and being able to stay here is truly a magical experience! We've actually won the Single Rigid Open class the last 2 years here, so that brings back great memories also!

Frenchy arrived early also and helped us cook up some dinner that evening. Jacques is a fun guy to have around a 24 Hour race scene too, he talks to everyone, finds out where the "source" (of wine) is, and is pretty much laughing the entire time!

The morning of the race was not exactly as we had imagined, but it proved to be perfect for start time as it was cooler than normal and gradually got better as the race went along.

Spencer (Randy's son) was my right hand man during the race too, here you see him patiently waiting to see dad come in from a lap and he would help out wherever he could and was just having a good time for the entire race.

Will and Randy are looking good after a few laps under their belts. Taking time to stop and refuel, hang out, and let me clean and re-lube their drivetrain and check that their brakes aren't rubbing for any reason!

Once the night laps started, I all of a sudden had a bit less to do so I played with taking photo's of racers riding by with their lights looking for the streaking effect. This was my favorite as you cannot even see the rider yet the path in front of him/her is completely lit up. Fun stuff.

The morning brings new life and many happy faces! Randy and Spencer enjoy a snapshot before Randy cranks out another lap on his big 'ol tires!

Jacques finds the largest folding camp chair on solo row! It holds a 6-pack, 3 on each arm!

Paul Doty from Turin Bikes in Denver, 2nd place in the single speed solo division, shows a little trials skills after his last lap. Nice work Paul!

Tell me he's not super excited to see his dad come in from his last lap!! Love the pic of Will and Spencer hanging out in front of the Dales rig!

Oh, and Will won the Single Speed Solo Division with 13 laps at 15.7 mi. per lap that's 204.1 miles!! Also, with approximately 1,400 vert. per lap that's more or less 18,000 feet of climbing in one ride! Whew, I'm tired just typing all this stuff and thinking about that effort!!

And there we are, the 3 amigos, glad that the race is over and we can just hang out for a while! Pretty amazing experience on my end too, as I had two racers out on course and the time gaps were constantly changing. It definitely kept me busy cooking and making sure all their stuff was ready to go at a moments notice. See ya out there at a 24 or 25 hour race soon!!

Origin8 also has a new Snowbike coming to the market, hopefully by January! It has a NuVinci rear hub, which is similar to having an 11-42 rear cassette. Being that it is an internal setup, the single speed drivetrain has many advantages in the muck and snowy conditions.

The Xtracycle never seems to fail me. I got this crazy idea to ride my Xtra from Glenwood up to Aspen Highlands carrying all my splitboard stuff for a nice skin up Highlands after 44 miles in the saddle. Of course a handfull of IPA's at the Glenwood Canyon Brew Pub and I start thinking of ways to spend the day on the bike and to also get a little snowboarding in too! So after gettin' all my stuff packed up by 11 pm the night before I was ready! Planned start time was to leave by 6, well I made it out the door by 6:45am, not bad for still kinda being hungover! After a nice ride up to the Village Smithy and some incredible breakfast I was in for an incredible day!! I didn't get any shots of the party on the final day of Highlands but I will definitely go back up there next year because that place was off the hook!! If you weren't dressed up in some fashion you were definitely in the minority! All in all it was an incredible journey and the last 44 miles downhill back to G'wood was quite wet but well worth it!!

24 Hours of Moab 2010

The VIP camping spot for 24 hours of Moab, you either know about it or you don't, but chances are you probably can't stay here unless you're a Stomparilla or support for a Stompa, well ok there's a few more people that could come but anyway. This camp is one of the main reasons for me wanting so bad to get to 24 Hours of Moab each year. It is a home away from home and I always wish I just had a few more days there every fall.

Well the racing season is officially over now that the 24 Hrs of Moab is done. This years team Stomparillaz (Will Inverso, Michael Hayes, Darin Binion, and Chris Brandt) completed 20 laps (2 more than last years win) in the 24 hrs and emerged victorious!! By a narrow margin of 3 min and 23 seconds over the ever challenging Adobe team (Nick Rico, Kenny Jones, Corey Larrabee, and Rick Sunderlage) from Salt Lake City, the Stompaz overcame failing lights, tacoed wheels, over the bars rib bruising crashes and many other challenges that you will face in a 24 hr race. Finishing 13th overall outta some 350 or so teams we represented this here Roaring Fork Valley along with the likes of 3 other teams also from the Roaring Fork Valley:
- Max Taam and Sari Anderson of the Honey Stinger/Trek Team won the National Title with 10 and 9 laps respectively in the Mixed Duo class, placing them 19th overall out of some 350 teams.
- Joel Mischke, Charlie Eckart, Mike Scanlon, and Jason Lapointe, who won the Master's 35+ division and the National 24 Hr. title, racing for the Basalt Bike and Ski/ESC squad, each completed 5 laps and that win netted them 7th place overall.
- Len Zanni, Kalan Beisel, Ross Schnell, and Jay Henry of the Honey Stinger/Trek Team not only won the National Title they also had the fastest lap (Ross busted out a 57min 51sec lap!!) and the overall win with 22 laps, faster than anyone else at the entire race. Now they're not all Roaring Forkers but Ross is around quite a bit and Jay just lives over a couple of hills, anyway congrats to all who competed this weekend, it was a blast.

Here's Will 'bout to head out on one of his night laps, pretty sure this one was from about 2 am. Ride, shower, eat, sleep, ride, shower, eat, sleep.

The Stomparillaz earned the top spot for a second year in a row, congrats fellas to an absolute epic battle between the strongest two single speed teams to meet up in Moab in a while. Good work out there Adobe/Salt Lake fellas you definitely left us lookin over our shoulder a few more times than we cared and chasing you in others.

We even found some time for gardening while we were out there! Even after 75 miles of racing Michael and Will just had to get the rake out and "clean up" some more room for parking spaces there at VIP. Notice they really are smiling too!! It did look much better after we raked it out.

Every year we stay there we always leave some form of art for the VIP camping/Sandbox as it is called by Judy and Will. This year I constructed a wind chime made out of bike parts, and Will helped me hang it up. Note how "safe" the ladder looks in this position!! Of course I stepped back to take a picture and not hold the ladder, but hey, Will is pretty quick on his toes and would probably land on his feet regardless.

Our trusty steeds just hanging out while we're up on the podium, ready to go at a moments notice.

Fresh off the Raggeds trail last weekend we had a mere 8 bikes and 8 people we had to stuff in the truck, watch us do it!! niRAD
Oh and the Raggeds is in killer shape, not too many trees down (10 or so?!) so there was incredible flow at times, technical at times and straight up hike a bike!! super fun, killer group of friends riding in party'o'vascular style, stompin at its finest!!

Next time you go out for a ride with Getty make sure to stay far far away from him when he's picking up keys. He has a special technique, you should see him try to put this thing in his lock, while riding!!

Diesel Dan came in with his new Heron frame and fork and needed to find a couple of parts to start the build on his new steed. Well after a few hours of cruising the parts bins, etc. he had a complete bike to ride home, sick!! Now I cannot tell you haw many times that I have attempted this task of building a bike from the ground up, with parts that are just hanging around here in the shop, and failed. Most of the time I have to order one thing or another just because of the certain specs of each bike, but this time everything worked, amazing!! Here's a couple of pics of Dan and his bike and the most incredible headbadge leading the way. Have fun out there Diesel buddy I know you will!! niRAD

Weekend of the Fourth!!

First Henry and Shawn showed us their latest creation, very nice!!

Shannon moved the Airstream into Sopris Park.

Ross went for a swim in the Crystal River, brrrrrr!!

We Rode our Xtracycles to Redstone.

Then took over the beach.

End of a great day of riding, swimming, drinking, eating, smoothie makin'. Just chillin' in the Airstream with Max and Hillary, bueno!!

Will (winner of both races) sported a super nice wool jersey on day one!!

Kevin came out and enjoyed some mud too!!

Josh had "extra weight" he picked up along the short 6 mile loop.
Over all it was an incredible weekend of racing, didn't get any pics from the hill climb, but Will got me at the end, I came in second. :)
